It’s been a very busy week for water polo! While the U14 sides were battling at Reddam, we saw some big games take place all around!

Pitcairn Cup

Last weekend saw the clash between some of the biggest water polo playing schools in the country – the Pitcairn Cup, hosted at Reddam in Tokai. With many close games, and some not so close, it was a great weekend to watch polo!

In the boys’ section, it was all fight, right down to the last. The semi-finals saw Reddam take on Bishops, and SACS take on a strong Wynberg side. While Reddam walked away a little shaken after a spectacular twister goal by Bishops in the dying second, SACS had much more of a battle taking on Wynberg. With full time coming in at 2 all, the penalty shootout went the way of SACS, with a brilliant save by their goalkeeper to end off 4-3. The final on the other hand was not as close, for after the first chukka ended 0-0, Reddam shifted gear and walked away with the gold after a 5-1 win. A huge congratulations to coach Jesse Singer and his boys!

The girls section on the other hand was one upset after another. In the semi-finals, we saw Reddam take down Wynberg 5-0, with many a well finished long range attempt.  For Herschel, the tournament favourites Westerford proved too strong, and the game ended 6-2. The final was a very different game however, with Reddam breaking the Westerford team to take the gold with a 7-2 win! A big shout out to Nic Molyneux and his girls for a very well-played tournament!

Results from the weekend

While the U14s were busy at the Pitcairn Cup, the other age groups went to work as normal.

For the boys, very few games were played, but this did not stop the fights!

Bishops took on Reddam at Bishops, and showed what a home ground advantage really looks like! The game ended 10-4 to Bishops, but it was not an easy win! For the U15s, Reddam flexed their muscles, and managed to win a tight game 4-3.

SACS had a double for the week to catch up fixtures after the tournaments. First taking on their old rival Wynberg, the game was an easy one for SACS, ending up 13-2. In the week, a huge battle against Reddam went on, but they proved too evenly matched, ending 2-2. For the U15s, SACS managed to take Wynberg 9-3, but proved too weak for Reddam, losing the game 10-5.

For the girls, there were also very few games played, with many of these taking place mid-week.

Herschel had a great weekend against Springfield, winning all of their games. The U19s won 11-2, the U14s were very close at 6-5, but the biggest score for the weekend goes to the Herschel U16 side, who won their game with a massive score of 31-0!

Reddam took on Wynberg, managing to walk away with all three wins too. The U14s won 6-1 in the closest of the three games, while the U16 side walked off with a 21-0 win. The U19 side managed a comfortable 9 goal lead, to win the game 10-1.
