FREEDOM SWIM 2019
We are a group of past Western Province Schools Water Polo players with a passion for water polo. Representing and playing water polo for our Province was always a highlight of our year, but for many, the financial burden of training, kit and tour costs is too high. We have created the Western Province Schools Water Polo Alumni Foundation to assist these water polo players in achieving their dream of representing their province at the interprovincial tournaments held each year. In 2018, Joshua Ackerman completed the first Freedom Swim for the Alumni Foundation and this year will see 18 past and present Western Province Schools Water Polo players attempting the 8km swim from Robben Island to Big Bay on 13 April 2019.
Swimming for Good is the motto of the Freedom Swim, and these water polo players will be swimming from Robben Island to Big Bay mainland in their Turbo costumes, caps and goggles. The swim is known as the hardest extreme open water swim in the world, the main extreme being the water temperature which is usually around 13°C, and since it is open to the Atlantic Ocean, swimmers experience swells and chop similar to the English Channel.
Please support us in helping these young sportsmen and sportswomen achieve their dream of representing their Province. Each and every donation, no matter how big or small will go 100% towards assisting players with financial need.
