To continue with our profiles of the coaches who will be traveling here very soon, here is the next instalment: Rhys Howden!
At the age of 14, Rhys first started playing water polo. As an avid fan of the water, it came to him naturally and soon he was playing at the highest level. Together with his brother, he was encouraged to play after some of the senior players at his father’s club noticed just how good they were – something which led him to where he is today! In 2007, he earned his first cap for the Aussie Sharks, and in 2008 attended his first Olympics.
In his career so far, he has played in four world championships, three Olympic games and one world cup, as well as captaining the team from 2013 to 2016, amassing 200 international caps!
As well as having played international water polo, Rhys has also played for clubs in Europe and South America, and is currently playing for the Brisbane Barracudas in Australia! With multiple club titles to his name, it is no wonder Rhys is one of the top-rated players in Australia!
With all of his playing experience, it is no wonder Rhys is also considered one of the best coaches in Australia, where he acts as director and head coach of the Academy Water Polo together with Simon Daley.
Just to prove that hard work can pay off, Rhys was nominated for Australian of the year 2017!
With a record like this, who wouldn’t want to be able to say they were coached by such a big name in our game??
